Traveling with pets

We are planning on taking a fifth wheel to Florida for 3 months this next year.We will be leaving from northern Ohio about the first week of January. Will the temperature in the 5er be suitable for our 3 cats, and what is a good way for them to travel, in a crate or not? We are afraid it will be to cold for them because they are indoor cats.

Thanks
Rose

  • We used 3 dogs as a reason to resize from a C to an A with a slide :B.

    Always an option...
  • Thanks everyone, that is what we thought, now I need to figure out how to fit 3 cats and 2 dogs and 2 adults in just a supercab truck.

  • We've pulled our 5er to Florida twice. It was darn cold inside the trailer (unlike a motorhome that at least receives dashboard heat) - but once parked, the furnace heated it up rather fast. In OUR case, we couldn't run the furnace while traveling even if we wanted to (we didn't) because our closed slideout covered 2 of the 4 heat registers, and it's not good for the furnace fan to have blocked vents.

*IF* we had cats, I would have carried them in a crate in the back of our truck, where it was warm and reasonably quiet. I don't know how noisy a 5er is going down the road, but I suspect it creaks, rattles, and suffers from wind noise.
  • Our 2 cats travel in the pickup in a kennel. We make frequent stops for them to use the litter box in the trailer. We just plan extra time into our travels to allow for that. They used to hate traveling, now they more or less tolerate it. I bought the biggest crate I could find that would fit in my back seat and built an extra little shelf inside it so they have more room.

In crates big enough for a small litter box and IN your tow vehicle.
  • It really depends on your animals.
In the tow vehicle is safer.
Of course it can also be noisier.

We used to travel with two Siamese, when they were young they didn't "hate" traveling inside the trailer. When they got old, they hated it. But then they also just endured traveling in the truck.

Of course "in the tow vehicle" means more stops so that can wander around the rig deciding to use the liter box. So then you give up and hit the road again, to discover (10 minutes later) now HAS TO GO.

We are still working on options with the new cats
  • Not only will the temperature be unsafe, the ride is too rough and bumpy. The animals would be traumatized and never want to get in the trailer again. Please bring them in the TV with you!
  • Most folks will tell you not to leave pets in a trailer while traveling. I will too.
  • Take them in the truck with you. Never leave pets in a trailer while going down the road.
