Use Astro Turf????????????

My little male Shih Tzu has destroyed my lawn by pawing it up every time he goes. The lawn has several holes in it and patches of what was once a beautiful lawn are now bare.
Here's the questions.

Has anyone else out there had this problem??

Did you retrain the dog not to do it??

Or did you install a doggie area with Astro Turf??

If you did how did it hold up to the pawing/digging??

  • NO, no and no on astro turf!!!!Heavy hard to clean and stinks when dirty to high heaven when soiled. :B:B

    A. Put up a contained kennel area for him - pea gravel
TSC has small outside portable chain link kennels on sale all the time.

    OR

    B. Put up an ex-pen and put down sun shade from Lowes underneath it and put stakes on all four corners.

I use the sun shade on the ground when RV'ing all the time under my ex-pens. You could put 2 expens together and it would be 'plenty' of room for your little guy to run around in and do his business.

I am an over the top dog person BUT your house and your lawn is YOUR domain and for YOU to enjoy not the dog!:C

The sunshade allows all water/pee to drain thru it AND the best part it allows you to pick up the poop cleanly with a scooper instead of smearing it all over when you try to pick it up on grass.

The sunshade is also real light weight an 8 x 8 piece of it that would fit under 2-expens will fit in a small bucket of soapy water to wash it in and hung up dries in 5 minutes. Or just squirt dawn on it in place and hose off, again dries quickly.

    Good Luck!
  • May be re-do the yard to a desert landscape using a mixture of sand and dirt instead of gravel like most I've seen!

Real easy to pick up the crrr, .... I mean poop! The best part is NO MORE mowing the lawn!

  • If you want to build him a potty area IMO the better option would be to use mulch or sand rather than something like AstroTurf. Here's a site that explains how to go about it -- Link

An easier option may be to do as PapPappy suggests.

I have to ask -- are you leaving him outside alone for periods of time? Because it seems rather unusual to me that a small dog could do significant damage just from the amount of pawing/digging they typically exhibit after doing their business. For most dogs that's more of a quick wiping of the feet than actual digging. OTOH it's very common for dogs to dig from boredom/stress if left outside alone.
  • I think I'd work on retraining the dog. Walk him on a leash when you take him outside, and correct him every time he begins to dig.
Give him a treat when he doesn't dig (it may also help distract him after he goes), and eventually, the cycle will be broken:)

The problem with astro-turf, is that you'll need to hose it down, and if the dog has a loose stool, it may be pretty nasty!

Good luck with whatever you decide:)
