It is pretty standard, at our practice too. But there are ways to do it that are sensitive to the situation and there are situations where prepay is a very poor choice (animal in extreme pain, vocalizing; agonal breathing - for example).
Just a note and recommendation, any of you who are approaching that time with your pets, take the opportunity to discuss the procedures and options with your vet or the office personnel so you know your all options before you have to make the decisions while stressed.
