Dr. Doug, Andy vomits yellow bile in the morning. Not every day, but it seems to be happening once a week. I've tried adjusting his feeding times and giving him a small meal before bedtime and it seems to be helping, but this morning he vomited again. Small amounts of yellow bile, no food. Before bedtime, I give him a small amount of kibble with a little canned dog food and I moisten the kibble. He does have liver issues and is on ID and Denamarin. I read on the Internet that he possible could take a Pepcid AC before bedtime to help with this. The only drug I give him is Centrine after he vomits - that settles his tummy and stops the vomiting. With his liver issues, I'm hesitant to add any more drugs. Please let me know what you think about this matter. I am really disappointed I can't seem to stabilize him with this. This also happened last year at the same time, but I was able to stop this with a change of diet. It is discouraging, and scary for me as I think I'm going to lose him sooner rather than later.Rita

Take them to the doctor! Could be as simple as touchy stomach to as serious as cancer.

I would definitely take him to the vet just to be sure. However we have a female Boston that vomited Bile almost every morning. We took her to our vet and he prescribed the Pepcid AC once a day and that took care of it. Once in a while she will have a relapse but it's very rare now. I hope it all works out for you.Doug

I know Andy has regular visits with his vet :B. If this is an ongoing thing, discuss the use of Pepcid. I really like using this drug in this situation as it has few side effects and is pretty effective. I suspect it's his liver causing the mild upset, but if he hasn't had blood work real recently or since the vomiting started, it might be a good idea to repeat and see if the liver is worse.Doug

Yes, take him in to the Vet. My shih tzu was doing that a few times. My vet said it was acid reflux. I laughed but now give her Pepcid AC, 1/2 tablet each night. Hasn't done it since. Her snoring and snorting at night has stopped also.

Don't mistake true vomiting with acid reflux spit ups. Our Boston has acid reflux and quite often after running hard, jumping off the bed, getting overheated, or just for no reason, up will come yellow foam, or,white foam, water, and even occasionally a piece of kibble. It just seems to spill out of her. Sometimes we give her an acid reducer for a few days and she gets a break from it for awhile. She feels fine, digestion is good, it's just that she has gerd, just like people. It took us a couple of years to figure out what she ate had no effect, just when and how much. We paid astronomical vet bills trying to figure out why she was "vomiting". Vomiting is stomach spasms and foul vomit...we only saw this once when she was truly ill. She rarely vomits, we call it throwing up.

In addition to many small meals I add warm water to the dry dog food and let it soften before I give it to my boys. This seems to help as well.

I thought I'd update what's going on with Andy. I'm cautiously optimistic - he has not vomited once this past week. I've been giving him a small meal just before bedtime, and it seems to have helped with the excess acid and vomiting in the morning. I did get Pepcid AC and an ok to use it from my vet, but so far I haven't. I'd like to keep him on a reduced drug regimen due to his liver function if possible. I've also been feeding him smaller meals more often during the day. So far he's been his usual self and still has a great appetite. I hope this will continue and I'll adjust his feeding schedule accordingly, even when we are travelling.

Called my vet and he told me that I could give Andy 1 10mg Pepcid AC once a day, between meals. I am going to try this and hope it helps with the early morning vomiting.

We also had a dog that did this in the morning on an empty stomach. We started offering her a little bit to eat when we had our breakfast and it was no longer a problem. Seemed to take care of it.

My dog used to do that too. She is a rescue I got from Mexico and it usually happened on an empty stomach in the morning. I changed her eating routine which was non-existent to morning and evening before bed and it hasn't happened since.

Thanks Dr. Doug. I will call my vet Monday morning. Meanwhile, Andy is eating and acting normally. I did read up on Pepcid AC and discovered it is a specialized antihistamine, which reduces or stops the acid formation in the digestive system. Andy was on Benadryl for months before his surgery because the tumors on him were suspected of being mast cell tumors, which release histamine. He had no vomiting occurrences during that time. He's been off the Benadryl for several weeks now, and that's when the vomiting episodes began. Hopefully I'll be able to get something that will eliminate this, and of course I'll keep monitoring his liver values. It's like walking a tightrope when your pet has liver or pancreatic issues.

My dog had a similar situation. Gave her slippery elm powder (natural) with evening meal. Can be used by humans to settle stomach. Divided amt of food into 3 meals and switched to a food with less fat. Problem solved! She is now off the elm powder & doing well.
