Often, it's not that these premium options are a "terrible" choice, but that they are simply no better than less expensive options.
If our society, we put an extreme amount of weight on "if it's more expensive, it must be better". In reality, it is often more true to say "if it's really cheap, it's probably not that good". At some point, the added cost does nothing more for the product's quality. But, "it's expensive, so it must be good".
There are many mid-range options that are just as healthy as the high end ones. Which you choose should be based on how well your dog does on it. If your dog doesn't like it, has digestive issues due to it, gains or loses excessive weight, has poor coat and/or teeth due to it, etc., then it doesn't matter how much it costs - it's not a good product for your dog.
