DW and I have both had dogs since childhood. Our first few long RV trips were without the dogs as my SIL loved dog sitting and getting out of her parents house. There was an illness issue with one dog that required us to come home early and they have been a part of our travels since.
We were without a dog for about 4 months from Jan-April 2010 and took an extended trip with just the two of us. We both were going through "dog withdrawal" during the whole trip and made use of everybody else in the campgrounds getting our dog fix.
I'd echo what everybody else has said, you both need to be in agreement. Your wife should be able to get a lot of dog interaction in campgrounds - that's one of the quickest ways to meet people- even without owning a dog.
