But I do agree with compromising. Get a cat that is like a dog.
When we were suddenly empty nesters we thought about getting a dog. We had one before the kids and wanted the companionship again. We made a list of pros and cons and decided the cons outweighed the pros.
I happened to be reading a book that had some cool cats and I Googled "cat that is like a dog". The name Tonkinese kept showing up and we got a couple - sisters. I have to say they are the perfect pets. They don't need to go outside and get muddy feet... They can be left in the RV when we go on hikes or sight-see. They can even be left at home for a few days in case of an out of town emergency. And the most important thing - they are loving and like to play fetch. And they love vacations - they actually run to get into their carrier 'cuz they know we're going on a trip...
