We have never had a problem with lightning on our underground Ethernet links. We have had several where it came in over the power lines. You can use a Cat 5 surge protector

You could also use underground fiber, which would assure high speed error free communications up to 1,800 ft on multi-mode fiber. Fiber and fiber transceivers are now quite inexpensive.
