A Full Length Movie Is How Many Gigs

I notice that Amazon is going to online movies and that they're going to be less expensive than NetFlix. I am using Millenicom and get 20 gigs per month. My question is: how much of that does the average 2 hour movie use up? All comments appreciated. THANKS!

  • Amazon and Netflix stream the video to you, so the amount of data you use will correlate to time (as in how long is the movie).

Netlifx, you can figure between 300 meg to 700 meg PER HOUR of watching SD content. HD you can estimate it being around 3 gig PER HOUR. Amazon Instant Video uses even more....

Unfortunately Amazon does not allow you to adjust the bandwidth setting manually, but the stream does adjust "on the fly" -- for example, if the internet connection is too slow, you won't get an HD quality movie. However, the video might break up as the bandwidth gets re-adjusted (causing skips in playback).

Netflix allows you to force the video quality - so that might be your better option.
  • The file size seems to vary quite a bit, even if you stay with SD, I've had them use up 1 gig to 3 gig per movie.
  • Due to compression I believe a hd movie uses less than a gig I have streamed a movie to my iPhone and it's never used more than a gig as tracked on the phone. The actual DVD uncompressed is much more but netflix and amazon compress.
  • tvman44, your 4GB estimate *is* for an HD movie. An SD movie would be about 700MB for a 2 hour movie.
  • I would say approximately 4 gigs average, HD a lot more. :)
