A Long Car Trip Ahead and Need Advice

We are going to be departing in about 6 weeks from our home here in Fallon, NV to East Tennessee, Atlanta, Georgia and up to Jacksonville, North Carolina. Then head back home to Nevada. Because we will not be towing the RV will be stuck in a lot of different hotels along the way. I am wondering about what to do for internet while on the road, we have our Android cell phone, a laptop and a tablet. I am guessing that using Hotel Wi-Fi is not to safe so what is suggested for online security if I need to access something like my bank account?

  • If you have unlimited Verizon you are searching for a solution for which there is no known problem. Use your Verizon and don't worry about it.

  • I used to use my verizon phone as a wireless hotspot for the laptop. Recently verizon stopped allowing wireless so I've been having to use a USB cable instead. Still works OK but tied to the cable. I use the FOXFI app on my phone to make it all happen.
  • Thanks to you all, I do appreciate all the great inputs. I think I will just go with my Verizon service and not worry about it so much.

  • Even when campground (or motel... the few times we've had to use a motel) wifi is available, we never use it. We use our SmartPhone's hot spot for everything. We also have an unlimited data plan. Now granted, it's "unlimited", but after so much usage, I understand it slows down? But not cut off. Still, we've used our phone's hot spot extensively, and have never come close to reaching that switch-over point.

Maybe we are just a little more cautious, but my wife and I both have the ability to work-from-home, and both our job require a secured wifi. So our phones are the way we do it.

Depends on what you are doing.. I'd use the Cell for Banking and related financial stuff.. Hotel for watching movies or Facebook/Forums/Twit...ter
  • Most banks have an app that you can download to your phone. The app allows you to do any banking the same as via a laptop - even more. You can take a picture of a check and make a deposit.
I've been doing it for years.
  • I have the Verizon 8 inch tablet and ITS my wifi for laptops.. fully portable.
plus 2 cheap cell phones. 24/7/365....

    I love that feature.

There's a risk with ANY wifi network. If you want to secure those connections, you need a VPN. While there are a few free VPNs, I prefer to use a paid one. My favorite is Azire (azirevpn.com), which is relatively inexpensive, and can be bought for as short a time as 1 month for 5 euros. A year's service is 45 euros. It is a Swedish company, but has servers in the US, does not track you nor keep records on your activities, and will give you a fully encrypted connection the the net.

I use it all the time, especially whenever I use a public wifi network, but even at home. All your traffic is encrypted, and when you do things like banking, you get the benefit of things being encrypted twice, making interception especially useless. I've also marveled that sometimes I find traffic via Azire to be FASTER than non-VPN traffic, which makes no sense, but does happen when I test it sometimes.

X2. I'm using Tunnelbear VPN. The long-term hotel where I'm living right now has public, unsecured WiFi. Using the VPN, I have no qualms doing banking and other financial transactions.
