Adding wifi to non wifi tv

Is there a way to add wifi to a tv that is not wifi ready? I have a wireless router at home and would like to surf the web and watch some video like youtube on my tv. How can I do this?

The Chromecast matches your requirement fairly closely since it will allow you to surf the web. Technically, you surf the web on your PC, phone, tablet, etc... and the web pages are "cast" to the TV screen.

Some BlueRay players and SmartTV boxes include a browser but surfing the web via the typical remote control is cumbersome at best.

Johnthebru mentioned Android media players. These are actually referred to as Android mini-PCs. One of these will probably more closely match your requirements than any of the other suggestions as they are essentially a PC running Android OS. They plug in to an HDMI port on your TV and display their output on the TV. They are essentially the guts of an Android tablet without a display. There are thousands of apps that can be installed such as movie & music players, browsers for surfing the web, games, office apps, etc...

As far as your requirement to add wifi to your TV, wifi is the way almost all of these devices will connect to your router (most connect to the TV via HDMI). Not all will include wifi so if that is a requirement because the TV is too far from the router to use an ethernet cable then you will need to ensure the device you choose has built-in wifi.
  • The TV will need to have HDMI to use Chomecast or new blu ray player. Some older blu rays had outputs other than that.
  • Look up "some cool tech" on YouTube there are some nice small Android media players that plug into hdmi inputs. The chrome cast is really interesting also.
  • there are a number of devices available
    roku, chromecast, etc..

me i have a Sony media player, it connects to the TV thru HDMI
uses wifi to connect to my internet
i use it to watch netflix or amazon videos on the TV
  • Add a Roku box or get a smart Blueray player with wifi for about the same cost as the Roku box.
  • I have a DVD player in the house that has YouTube built in to it, did not cost very much.
  • What year and model do you have? Do you have the manual? You might be able to add a USB 802.11n nub.
  • Chromecast will allow you to watch YouTube, Netflix, and other video on your TV. Roku 3 Will also allow you to play some games.
