advice please - re: old software

I'm afraid I may having a box full of this as well. I was setup big time running a couple of DELL M90 work station laptops running dual 24 -inch monitors and software (some high dollar) for my ACAD drawings and photoshop things I love to do.

Since Windows XP dropped everything last year I am now tryong to figure what to do for computers. I have been running WIN7 on the wifes low end computer which continued to use my older software. Now that WINDOWS 10 is coming out means WIN7 is not long for this world now. The WIN8-10 computers won't run my old software.

Being retired no monies available to buy new versions of what I have...

I'll come up with something I reckon...

My XP DELL M90s worked out great running the RV Trailer roads... Just grab the M90 laptop and drop it into a Dell Docking station at my house computer room or on the RV docking station setup. Always had all my working programs and things I love to play with available to me anywhere we went.

I'll probably check with the local high school here and see if they want the old programs before hauling off the local dump... Might get a TAX write-off...

I'm in the printing business and I struggle with that everyday. I too have a bunch of old software.

Not much use for it and if someone were to use it today, most of us printers would have a fit trying to get an image on paper.

Do me ( and all the other printers) a favor and pitch it (LOL)!

BTW - I seen people hang old CD's from a tree to decorate outside for Easter...

If you want to use that old software, you might be able to setup a VM (Virtual Machine) running Win XP and run that software there. However, since the software has been apparently sitting in the closet unused since 1999 it would seem that you don't really use it anymore so there's not much point to it unless you wish to run it for nostalgic reasons.

If you think others with typsetting businesses might have a use for it, I would find a forum that deals with typsetting and offer it to the people there.

I have boxes of software on floppy that I really should toss, just haven't gotten around to it. Unfortunately, technology moves forward and often causes older technology to become outdated, regardless of how much money we paid for it.

Pitch it, it's of no use to anyone except the odd person who wants to mess with it. You might put it up on CL in the "Free" section if you hate to just pitch it. It would be a pretty good bet that quite a few of the floppies won't be able to be read anyway.

I cleaned out my basement last summer and threw out hundreds of floppy disks but I saved one box from the late 80's that has Microsoft Windows 386 v2.03 disks in it. I might sell it on ebay.

There is a very high probability that the floppies are completely unreadable, even if you can find a drive capable of reading that format. The magnetic stripes lose their orientation over time, and those things generally lose data in 5 years or so, especially if subjected to temperature variations.
