Dish DVR's are based on the top of the line analog ReplayTV DVRs that I use, in fact Dish got sued by Replay (Which by the way is now owned by DriecTV) over that and as happened with Direc and the not nearly as good TiVo,, Both lost (Dish and Direc) This is why you find many of the older Direc DVRs with the TiVo brand. Dish paid the fee.
I have several ways i can schedule a show.. DISH uses most of these as well
ONE: By name, channel, Date and time and Day.. This will record all occurances of say CSI (to use the shortest name I can type) at 11 pm on Tuesday, or on any day of the week or on Tuesday and Thursday (I have a lot of control) or whenever I want
I can also record any and all shows with the exact title CSI: Crime Scene Investigation
Occurring any time, any channel, any day (however if it shows up on more than one channel at the same time it picks the lowest one)
The actual "Theme" channel setting I use is "Any show who's title contains the string "CSI" (this includes the original, Miami and New York) any time any day any.. well same as the last.
That way as I move about and the channels change... I simply download the local channel guide to my server computer, Edit and limit according to what comes in good (Say it's on two channels, 7-1 and 62-2.. And 62-2 is stronger, I may delete 7-1 from being served) and the computers do their thing. All automatic. Very nice.. I also can get a report (Dish Can not do this, but the Relays with WiRNS on the server computer can) on shows that will not record due to conflict.
Oh the Relays can operate a VIP-211K.
When that happens... I get to watch one LIVE :)
