Clearly, those who recommend Microsoft Security Essentials(MSE) over other major AV software haven't done the research. Case in point, three of the major "independent" security organizations who routinely test AV software, rate MSE at or near the bottom for its detection capabilities. Do the research yourself at AV-Test.org, AV-Comparatives.org, and virusbtn.com.
But not unexpected. According to PCPro.co.uk, Holly Stewart, senior program manager of the Microsoft Malware Protection Center, basically stated that they were not focusing on keeping MSE competitive with other AV products. Instead, passing on threat info to other AV makers by making MSE a baseline to build on. Which can be interpreted as saying that MSE will likely rate at the bottom of AV testing, and third party AV software would likely provide better protection. Which has routinely been the case from reviews conducted by notable AV security sites.
This has been pointed out by a few popular tech sites: PCPro.co.uk, Lifehacker.com, HowToGeek.com, blogs.mcafee.com, news.softpedia.com.
It makes little sense to use MSE when other completely Free alternative AV packages are readily available, which plug the security holes that MSE currently leaves open. Exposing your system to unnecessary vulnerabilities.
If resource usage is an issue, then look at Bitdefender Free which rated just as light as MSE, yet less un-intrusive, while providing top of the line protection.
