I don't think its necessary to pay for an AV package as the major free software uses the same engine and technology as the their paid versions. The exception being Malwarebytes Pro which IMO is worth buying for its added benefits.
Comodo Internet Security, which is also free, includes basic sandboxing technology for browsers and for unknown applications. It also includes options to use their DNS.
It rated at the top in protection(100% detection) in tests by AV-Test.org, while as light on resources as MSE in WIN 7. I have it running on my Netbook, but admit it can be a little confusing to setup for non-techie. Such as Comodo's Kiosk function for sandboxing, which makes no sense and can add to the confusion? Why not just call it sandboxing?
