There are several,, AVG, and AVAST both have "Free" versions (They are nag ware always wanting you to upgrade to their expensive versions) malware bytes is also there, The first two run TSR (run constantly in the background) do not know if Malware Bytes does that... Recommendation is two different programs. one TSR (runs in background) and one "on demand" (runs when you wish) in fact 3 is best but 2 should do it, This computer is done that way, scanned by one or another "Demand" program every night.
  • I have been using nothing for 12 years and have been clean.
  • If you have W10 operating system, there is one embedded in the system and available for free.

Windows Defender is now a full blown anti-virus protection system with W10.

I have used it on two PC for over 6 months with great results.

"Best" is sometimes the result of paid advertising
  • I've been using Avast for years as we did in my last job. Great and easy.
  • Thanks you sirs, I'll download it tonight. I had NORTON before, but wanted to try something different.

The highest rated free PC AV application in terms of both protection, and minimal use of resources, by leading independent security organizations is BitDefender Free (BD). Though both AVG Free and Avast have both improved and also high rated.
