Any DSLR/SLR Lens Experts?

Get ten 80-400. It s a fantastic lens. If you only use 300 with t get the f4 300. Of corse you can always get the 2.8 and smile big.

KEH Camera (www.keh.com) buys and sells photographic equipment. I have purchased many items from them over the years and sold some, too. They are a quality, legit company, and their used equipment is very conservatively evaluated. If they say it is like new...they really mean it!

On another note: some older Nikon auto focus lenses will not auto focus on newer Nikon camera bodies.

yep, that tamron 18-270 is great. have one for my nikon and can use adapter on Nex 7. I think the Nikon version was about $800 however. nice to not have to keep switching lenses. well I have to switch between my 18-270 and 8-16. :)
since the lens is within return requirements, get rid of it NOW.

yes I have a Nex 3 and Nex 7. great little cameras. ILCs, not SLRs are the way of the future IMHO.

Go to keh.com and look for a good deal on a replacement. KEH is a highly reputable reseller.

You might even be able to get a little for the old lens. Sometimes they sell them for parts.

It's a genuine Nikon manual zoom lens that I bought used recently, and still under a refund period. So that's what I'll end up doing. I've seen used replacements starting at under $100. Note that it's not a DSLR lens, but originally for SLR, so also manual focus. But takes beautiful photos, at least at 300MM. :B

I'm tempted to take it apart. But with my luck, some spring mechanism will end up flying out across the room that will never be found. I no longer have any cats in the house, so can't rely on them as my flying parts tracking radar. :B

is this a power zoom or manual zoom? I traded in an excellent/mint 70-300 sigma/or tokina lens to B&H a while ago and could give you the S# and you could see if they still have it.

I agree with Tom...it's really up to you to decide the value.

Now, that said, if you were thinking of just tossing it, and going to buy a replacement...here is what I would do...
1.) Price out a replacement lens. (Amazon, E-bay, etc....but an equal lens)
2.) Price out what it would cost to have this one fixed. (include shipping, etc.)
3.) If it's cheaper to just replace it, THEN, I'd try to take it apart, and see if I could fix it.....with the full expectations that I'd be tossing it all in the trash upon completion:S....and saved a bunch of money, if I happened to make it work:) After all, you are at the point of "who gives a sh*t!" anyway, so why not try and fix it.

Keep in mind, that even an old Nikon lens is probably a pretty valuable piece, so it may very well be worth getting it fixed. Compare new/used Nikon lenses for replacement...not just some cheapo zoom that you might find on Amazon.

My advice on disassembling the lens....take pictures of it as you go, so that you can put it back together again. That's what the guy on American Restorations does.:)
