You don't have to buy Apple-only cable. All after market cables used to work. Then Apple made a change. All my after market cables quit working. This is about a year ago maybe longer. In about two months new cheap aftermarket cables showed up. Still less than half of what Apple charges. Probably made at the same factory.
Question is where did you buy obsolete cables at?
