Anyone useing WEBROOT antivirus?

Geek Squad is now pushing WEBROOT when they work on a computer and I have it installed on my DGS's laptop and my laptop. Has anyone tried this AV out?

It seems to be okay but how can you tell until it fails to stop malware of some sort.
  • I've found Webroot the best of the lot for home use for the past three or four years.

I used to work in IT at a major corporation - and one of the functions of our team was Anti-Virus for all the laptops/ desktops world wide.

All the AV companies work basically the same way. Pattern Matching - and each has a predictive behavior component.

Years ago - AV companies got samples of suspected viruses - took the code apart - tested the pattern to recognize the virus - did a beta test with some trusted users - and released an update.

Today - AV companies get or hear of a suspected virus / malware - make a quick test to find some type of pattern - and release an update to the world. Several times each day. Which means all the users are Alpha Testers. When they get complaints back - on about 40% of their updates - the tweak them until people stop complaining. The majority of warnings people get today are False Positives.

Predictive behavior tries to recognize 'suspect' behavior and stop that from completing its task. This is most effective against Malware.

The problem is that the better predictive behavior screening - the heavier load on the computer - the more it uses resources and slows down your computer.

While I like WebRoot - for my wife - I also install and run MalwareBytes which is specifically focused on malware.

Because the best preventative against Malware is (1) never click OK on anything unless you know what it is doing; (2) never open video links from other people - search youTube and find the video your self; (3) delete any e-mail which is from someone you don't know - do not open them.

Remember that effectively everything you get on the internet and e-mail is a scam or a lie. Don't trust the internet from accurate information.
  • I've been using Webroot for about 2 years. It's caught few things and seems to be doing what it's supposed to. As you said, you don't really know until it fails. I'm no techie; I bought Webroot when I purchased a laptop from Best Buy and installed it on my other two computers, as well.
  • My oldest son is a IT engineer and he told me webroot is the best for home computers. Been working great for ten years, well worth $39.99 a year.:)
  • "Remember that effectively everything you get on the internet and e-mail is a scam or a lie. Don't trust the internet from accurate information."

You do realize that you posted this on the internet. Or is that just irony? :)
  • Yes. But I'm honest.

And I have some great swamp land outside Las Vegas for sale cheap. Cash only, small bills.
  • I have a fair amount of money in small bills, mostly $3 and $25.
  • I thank you for the comments. I have it on my new laptop and when I get my desktop back from Best Buy I'll install on that too. I like Malware Bytes and will reinstall that too.

    Thanks Again.
  • I use the same combination of Webroot and Malwarebytes. So far it has been a good pairing.
  • WebRoot and MalwareBytes have not failed me on my latest laptop from Best Buy.
