This is EXACTLY what happened to me with AT&T and I can't get to a store either. Seems really odd that they are forcing their customers to go to Best Buy.

If you are a NEW customer it may be (but I could be wrong) because of the "Patriot Act". The US government want to know who has cell phone service.
I've been an AT&T cell customer since the late 90's when they bought Cingular. And I was buying by Mobley from them, not getting it free with a two year contract. It just made no sense to me at all.

I have been a ATT customer for only 2 years. I got mine online WITH THE 2 YR CONTRACT with no problem. Took no more than 10 minutes. While it was no charge, I had to enter my credit card information to prove it was me and not someone else.
As you say "makes no sense" but rules are rules.
