When your system gets corrupted and crashes is ESPECIALLY when you need the system backup. In that case, you need to boot from a boot disk that the backup program allows you to create ahead of time. The boot disk allows you to boot the system and run the recovery program which will restore your system using the system image.
Also, many system image backups allow you to "mount" the image as another drive which allows you recover individual files without restoring the whole image.
