- I am just hoping Windows 9 is better than 8.x that I loathe.
Traded the old XP laptop in for a $100 credit on a Chrome Book. :) - K_CharlesExplorerXP still works on my desk top and I hope it stays that way.

It wasn't meant to be this way. Windows XP, now no longer supported, wasn't meant to be popular. For all its popularity and sustained usage, people seem to have forgotten something important about it: it sucked.

It sucks is a relative term.
Vista and the later versions were so bad they made it look good by comparison.
Happily I haven't had a need to use it for many years now. - AllegroDNomad

Have you tried MS Money? It an excellent checkbook program. Nothing really fancy, just a good program.
I stayed with DOS for a few years after Windows was introduced.
I still keep my checkbook in CHEX. CHEX is a DOS pgm and runs in a DOS window in XP. But alas, Win7, 8 and 8.1 will not run a DOS pgm. Even with the emulator.
I need a good Windows checkbook pgm. No, not Quicken.
Personally I loved XP when it came out. But then I'm always attracted to new shiny things. :)
MS stopped producing and supporting Money over 2 years ago. - fj12ryderExplorer IIIThat's no big deal. I use it now and have used it for the last 14-15 years. It still works just fine. You can download directly from your bank or CC to the program. Like I said it's a good check register program. I love it.

- burlmartExplorer"It all just goes to show, a lot of the things that might worry nerds and Ars readers may not be such a big deal for the computer-using public.

Windows XP worked fine for me from day one until I retired that beat-up laptop years later.
The Vista system on another laptop we brought was a disaster from day one and only got worse. - 1492ModeratorThere is always controversy with a new Windows release, with some notable review sites panning the latest versions. I actually held on to WIN 2000 so long that by the time I upgraded to XP, most of the software/hardware compatibility issues were all addressed. So liked XP more so than 2000 in most every way.
