As far as fuel stations go, Gas Buddy on my cell phone internet is very, very hard to beat! Pull up the app, touch to button to find your location, and up pops a list of fuel stations (gas or diesel, you select), and then you can hit the "map" and it immediately shows where you are and where the fuel stations are around you.
We still have a Tom Tom that works well for us for the "long journey" driving. Once we get closer to our destination, or searching for something in an area we're at, we flip to good old Google Maps on our phones. Zero's right in and takes us right there!
(and we always carry a paper map US Atlas) in the vehicles all the time for a "just in case" moment!
