I used a Tracfone because it had the lowest cost, under $7 a month, for maintaining service. $20 for another 60 minutes and 90 days service. You can pay slightly more to cover a year at a time. Minutes don't expire, I've accumulated 3300 minutes over about 10 years.
There are other plans with lower per-minute costs, if what you want are low cost minutes rather than lowest cost of keeping the connection alive.
Actually you can go even cheaper if you setup and manage your phone account via Tracfone website.
I tend to not use a lot of minutes per year which keep adding and rolling over so we discovered by accident that buying minutes online directly from Trac website you will have "options" of adding additional "service time" as you finish the transaction.
For my phone this last year we bought a 30 minute card and it gave the option to buy one year of additional service time for an additional $49. So for $60 I added 60 minutes (double minutes) AND ONE YEAR AND 90 DAYS of service time!
Thats a whole $4 per month!
You just can't get any cheaper than that.
By the way my DW and DD both have Trac phones and even they tend to stay within the 800 minute/1 year card each.. Way cheaper than paying $100-$160 per month that Verizon wanted to add phones to my old existing account..
I don't miss that monthly bill :B
