I have a cheap flip phone by Nokia and T-Mobile no-contract service. I rarely use the thing, but usually have an hour or so of time on it just in case. I think it has 84 minutes on it at the present time.
There is no monthly charge, and this year it has cost me $16.20. Like I said I don't use it much.
IMO it makes no sense to pay a monthly charge for a "just in case" situation. For me T-Mobile works best.
