Camping world prices skyrocketing.

I previously complimented CW on finally bringing their prices down and in line with the competition.

I even bought more stuff there then I had in years.

Now it seems it has now they swung the other way. The prices soared.

Stopped in to get some oil to change my generator oil. $14 a quart. WOW. I ended getting it at Cummins and paid, $4 a quart. I ended up with a quart of oil and filer for less then the price of one quart of oil at CW. They even informed me that CW gets their Onan oil from them. Even at retail, a $10 mark up?

I also looked at a Progressive industries EMS, they are $100+ over all other competition. Their "regular" price is higher then the MSRP, and the "ONLINE ONLY" sales price is just a few dollars under the MSRP.

I notice the outrageous prices when I got the 50th anniversary sale catalog. Just insane and thank goodness for Amazon and others who are competitive.

Just a heads up to be smart shoppers.

Camping world will soon be "going public". They are in the process of finalizing the terms of their IPO.
And that explains it right there. They are in the process of making the company look as good as possible in the short term so profits are up and they can boost the IPO pricing. What happens after that, who cares... The IPO is done. The company is shooting for $200mil
  • I stopped driving out there a couple of years ago, what I can't find in Wal Mart I can get on Amazon or Ebay for allot cheaper!
Dicor sealant is cheaper at Amazon and almost anything CAMCO is available there also!!
Plus I get tired of being chased down to get a chance to win a free camping membership at an exclusive club!!
Bit on that one once and it was a scam..
Finally allot of the bulk mail ads have stopped coming in the mail!! I think they got the hint!!
  • Our CW does usually price match, If they do I'll buy it from them. If not i'll buy it on line. No big deal waiting 2 days for most things

Why are so many complaining about capitalism?

Camping World has THE RIGHT to set prices where ever they want.
It must be working or they would change their model.
People are willing to pay for convenience and immediate acquisition.
Nothing wrong with that and convenience and immediate acquisition are worth something. The marketplace determines the worth.

I don't think it's the "capitalism" that folks are upset with. It's the daily flyers and the deluge of emails and the constant badgering of buy this from camping world, we are so inexpensive we will give you 50 dollars off of anything. When in truth they are not inexpensive they are more expensive than most RV places. I guess its the lies that turn people off. That's why Camping World is not a good business model and the reason they are not moving up in the market place. They are still privately owned and will never be a huge corporation because their business model can not stand up to national scrutiny. They are probably elbows deep in debt but of course we will not know because like I said they are private. If they where on sound footing they would have gone Public a long time ago. Why do I say that?? Because that's capitalism. That's what capitalism does, that's where the real money is.

    Just IMHO

Yep heard that Nine years ago.

CW has many items, but I simply don't shop there unless I have no choice due to high prices. There web site is good for finding things and reviews, but there is enough competition out there that has lower prices and better service to warrant not shopping there.
  • It seem to me it all started when Mr. M.L. got involved

OMGness, the insanity on this forum. CW and GSE are an undeniable success story and the biggest player in the market. Some of you are economically challenged.

Camping World is no stranger to tough financial times and barely survived in recent times. No reason to be insulting to other posters. Imagine how much more successful CW would be if they were competitive and didn't have so many customers walking because of their prices.

Seems to be the opposite of ML profit strategy.

They are the biggest player in the market. They are applying the if you can't beat them buy them strategy and clearly with their pricing they are beating no one. Just praying on the first time buyer and/or those who don't know any better..

A CW general manager told me that are trying to change the market and not for the good. They are attempting to eliminate all the low price sellers and those posting prices online. They don't believe in the 25-30% off that some sellers give.

I'm just not sure what is with the wild swing in pricing. Granted they can do what they like, but I was looking at two items which would cost me approx. 1100 Dollars at CW, ordered them for just under $850 from other sources. Both are clearly making money on the items.

Listing their "normal" price higher then the MSRP and then listing it at a sales price as a few dollars less then MSRP is truly a scam.

IF you don't let know CW that there pricing is making many customers walk, then they won't change their ways.

$14 for non synthetic oil? Really is it magic oil? Do you get magic beans with it.

And that list 9 years ago of IPO's being retracted was a mile long and some never did reissue their IPO's because they're now gone. The market crash was right around the corner
  • My wife purchased a couple of tire covers from CW a few years back and that put us on their mailing list. I will look through the flyers to see some of the up-and-coming items available that I did not know existed. If I like an item I will search generally on the internet and every time I have found the same item much cheaper somewhere else. That is how I purchase things. If people want to pay more, fine.

What does bother me is when I don't have a choice, and the retailer knows it too, and sets the screws real tight.

Why do you consider it a complaint. Capitalism has 2 sides. Those that sell and those that buy. Shopping around and getting the best price is important to me and Camping World sometimes has that. An aspect of capitalism is supply and demand. CW has a great "catalogue" of items. Sometimes they shoot themselves in the foot because their online system has big weaknesses.

Capitalism is great. It forces everyone to pay attention and provides competition, which usually benefits the consumer.
