Can I make my television play back through stereo receiver?

I have a Jensen JE1911 television connected via HDMI to a Jensen AWM975 stereo. I've been trying to find a way to get the TV to play back sound through the stereo system speakers instead of relying on...

In my home system, I added an optical cable from the TV to the 7.1 sound system.

In my RV, the cable was already there. I just had to set the sound system (5.1) to D.IN (digital input).
