I did the same at home as in the camper. I ran the headphone jack from the back of the tvs to the stereo. At home the surround sound works perfectly, in the camper we get stereo.
The nice thing is we only have to switch the input of the tv, the stereo never needs switching, and there are less things degrading the video signal.
