It works, but the Alfa is easier and doesn't have to be aimed.

I use a wireless repeater. Works like a charm.

If you are going in for $30 anyway, you might as well spend the extra few $ & get a made for the job dish from a company like Hawking, must be others too, which will take a 1 bar signal & make it 4 if not full scale.

I got a D Link N600 for $30 from Staples and then a pizza foil plate from a dollar store. 3 for 1.50. Sliced it open so that I could hang the adapter into the middle of the foil pan.

No lectures on grabbing someone else wifi. If I didn't want someone using my signal I would secure it. :) I used too have the ssid named FREEWIFI but I no longer have that set up, that was when free wifi was hard to find and smartphones were unheard of.

I made a pringles can antenna many years ago that had outstanding reception. It is amazing what you can put together as a reflector for just a few bucks that will work better then "AS SEEN ON TV" stuff you find for 19.95 (+ processing)

I will have it tell DW about the Pringles can, she uses the, to,ship,daffodils to her sister than lives in MN when they still have snow on the ground...:)

I use a method based on www.amatuerlogic.tv episode 3.

I have also used the one you find when you Google RV WIFI BOOSTER (it's a PDF file you print on heavy card stock, cut out, foil cover one piece and drop over an antenna) I have seen some interesting designs based on a kitchen strainer.

All work The first two I mentioned seem to be the best.

I'd like to try mounting the Wi-Fi modem in front of a Satellite dish but so far that has not worked as well as I'd hoped when I tried it, Need more math (And another dish) Before I try again.

People have been doing it for years. I understand (sort of) the engineering behind why this does or doesn't work. It is nothing new really, it is just a new application of and old idea.

No lecture, but be aware that unauthorized use of someone else's network (if it isn't intended to be free like McD or Starbux) is a crime in the US.

That being said, nothing wrong with using a booster, repeater, etc to draw in weak signals you are permitted to use.

It doesn't take much to make a pretty big difference.

FYI. In an emergency, lay your cellphone flat on the roof of your car on speaker phone for a better signal.
