Cell Company

We have Verizon (my bill is around $150.00 for two phones) now and am thinking of trying another company. We travel a lot around the country both by RV and car and plane.
Who should I not look at, and who should I look at.
  • My wife and I have Verizon "flip phones". I had Verizon on an old grandfathered plan for about $80 per month for 2 phones, no data and 12 cents per text. Switched to Tracfone with their BYOP plan (Bring Your Own Phone). We pay under $7 per month each now and get more minutes AND texts than we can use. Only problem with Tracfone and Straight Talk is that they do not roam on Verizon so Mt Desert Island (Acadia) there is a lack of coverage. I have a smartphone on Tracfone AT&T service that has coverage where Verizon doesn't on the island.
  • We have service from both Verizon & AT&T. When traveling west of the Mississippi River, it is rare that AT&T fails when we have Verizon service. Big Bend Texas & Alaska are AT&T country and Verizon fails.
    Pick your poison.

  • Wife and I have a Smartphone from Tracfone. Uses Verizon. Haven't used it anywhere we could not get a signal. EXCEPT Big Bend and the campground in Ft. Davis but neither did anyone else. Did get a signal on top of a hill. Different plans and you can buy minutes as need. Also has texting and data. Can buy data as needed. We spend less than $20. per month and she texts everything. Bought them on Amazon.

Go to their website and check around. 750 minutes, 1000 texts and 1 gig of data for 60 days for $35. Can buy 1000 texts for $5. or 1 gig of data for $10. Prices are even lower depending on needs.
  • $150 sounds high. I have four phones on the old family plan for less then that.

x3 They have the best coverage - others may be cheaper but who cares if you can get service in the area you are in

  • I have T-mo and My wife has Verizon. I like mine for price and an unlimited 4g data plan with no throttling, but My wife always seems to have coverage where I struggle fairly often. If we are in a large Brick and Mortar Store, she will have coverage in the back of the store while I have to go next to the front windows, or as mentioned camping in more remote areas. You get what you pay for, but we feel as long as one of us has coverage we are good.
  • In AZ and other areas Verizon is the only provider. In the west t-mobile, sprint and At&T do not have the coverage Verizon has. Specially if you travel the back roads like we do.
  • Depends what your priorities are. If you want the best coverage in the western US, stick with Verizon. If you want to save money and are willing to accept no coverage in some rural areas, try one of the lower tier brands. its all about coverage and where you travel and what you're willing to pay. since everyone has different priorities, the best choice varies
I've tried ATT, Sprint, T-Mobile and always gone back to Verizon for the coverage in remote areas where I camp frequently. Saving $20 a month does me no good when I end up with no coverage.

How much data you use per month is also a factor. Those who can get by with 5gig or less a month have more choices. Those like me who use 30 gig a month have fewer economical choices for that level.
