Chromebook and GPS

I'm thinking about buying a new tablet and the new Chromebooks with Play Store access look interesting.

But none of the models I have looked at have internal GPS sensors and there are no external sensors that can plug into the USB port and run in a Chrome environment. Drivers don't exist for Chrome.

Anyone running a Chromebook and using Google Maps for example?

Thanks

  • Thanks for the info...it looks like I'm better of with a straight Android tablet for the things I need. I have been getting by with a Galaxy Nexus 10 for the last three years soooo no real need for a Chromebook laptop, why go through any gyrations to run Google Maps.

  • It is possible, but you need to root the device. Then you can use USB or Bluetooth GPS. GPS doesn't need a special driver under Android or ChromeOS.
  • A Chrome book is not a tablet it's a laptop. Our Galaxy S2 Android tablet is WiFi only and has a GPS chip internal. Works well with Google maps and offline mapping systems such as Co Pilot.
