What did your diagnostic software say about the HD? Look at your HD SMART values. If you're getting bad or corrupt sectors, there are only so many that can be moved. If bad sector count is increasing steadily, than you do need to act quickly. Just because it can boot now and into safe mode, doesn't mean that bad sectors can't corrupt you MBR to the point that it can't be repaired, or other critical data lost.
