I had Carbonite. It used a lot of CPU all the time. It seemed like it was always running causing the system to slow down. My drive crashed, and the restore process was brutal. I thought you could run a restore with a new drive, and it would put everything back where it belongs. It doesn't work that way. Calls to Carbonite were useless. I was able to get my pics and financial files. I am currently using external and thumb drives. It's easy to store the thumb drives off-site. I plan on going to NAS (network attached storage).
