I use crashplan. I want to protect my pics and data against fire, theft, flood, and mechanical failure. Backup HD's primarily just protect against mechanical failure. I also want my backups done multiple times a day.
Personally I feel my data is at far greater risk sitting on my computer where someone could just pick it up and walk away with it. If someone really wants to see pictures of me and my family and they break the encryption on Crashplan they will prob be disappointed in the value they got for their effort.
Think about it. How many times a month do you swipe or hand your credit card to someone. Bottom line is it is all about risk mitigation. I think the risk of my data getting out there is far less than my data being lost to fire, theft, flood or mechanical failure of an HD. I have already had my house broken into where computer equipment was taken and when I was a kid my parents garage and nearly their house burned.
