We use DW's laptop while travelling and I break out my desktop when we're going to be stopped for a while. Don't have tablets or smartphones.
I have all three, smart phone, tablet and laptop. I still prefer the laptop for most things. I have a new Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon Gen 3 with Windows 8.1 that I love, very small and light. A little pricey for some probably but worth it in my view.
Regarding Google apps, I use them all and both Google Drive and Dropbox for cloud storage. Great combination. I find Google Sheets just as capable as any spreadsheet program for what I do.
I would not write off the MS Surface as I have not tried one, but I don't like the concept of trying to be all things to all people. I think that is the basic problem with Windows 8. I prefer my laptop for the PC environment (in Windows 7 mode) and smart phone and/or tablet for the touch world. Just my preference.
We're on the road now and I am using my laptop to post.
