Keep in mind that you can buy a ATT-capable phone from any vendor (including ebay) and just move the sim card from your current phone to the new one.
I was fortunate IMO to have gotten an iPhone 3GS refurbished from Consumer Cellular at a nice low price. This was about 2.5 years ago, I think. I've seen them offer new iPhones since then, but for 3 or 4 times as much as what I paid. I have been completely satisfied with my iPhone. It takes a smaller sim card than other brands, but CC will send you one if you want, so don't let that deter you if you want an iPhone from some other source. Just make sure it's an ATT type phone, not Verizon.
