COPYING files from Android to PC.

Thanks all for your suggestions. I figured it out.

I copied 2,796 from my wife's phone and 1,764 from my phone to a regularly backed up PC.

Dropbox (quite a bit of free storage) will automatically sync with my samsung j7 and samsung s8 My s8 is less than 2 months old.

We have Galaxy S8's also:

We just plug the phone into the computer using USB cord... After the computer recognizes your phone - Go the the "Files" folder on your phone and find the pictures your want....then use your mouse to drag and drop the picture you want to copy. We just drag them to our computer desk top and then do what we want to with them from there...

Look in folders that say....DMIC, or Camera to find the pics on your phone that you want...

This only copies the pictures..it does not delete them from your phone.

Works in reverse too ....(computer to phone

Install drop box on the phone and on the computer.

Having an Android phone isn't the key, Google Photos works on any phone. Google Photos is accessible from any device so no need to download them unless one is OCD about backup.

I don't understand this post as you posted above that you figured it out. Anyway, for any confused I have an Android 8.1 phone and here are the two steps to make the phone visible when USB connected.

Pull down notifications at top of screen, tap the Android System one visible in this screen capture:


Select "Transfer Files" in the pop-up in this screen shot:


Your phone will then be visible on the device it is attached to.

As I said before....you need to do a backup and factory reset. The issue came with the Android 8.0 Oreo release, only effects certain phones / builds of phones, and Google has not gotten a handle on it. People on this thread are confusing Android version with phone version. Android 9 Pie was just released and at this point is only on Google Pixel phones. 8 is the latest general release. Different carriers use different sub builds of Android. This is not an across the board issue.

I know the problem your getting, had it on an S7 active and neither myself nor our IT guru could correct it. Its a USB not detected error. The Samsung Kies app will not correct it neither will selecting the USB mode. Do the reset. If you backup to a google account your phone will return almost exactly to its previous state and afterwards all will ne as before with the USB connection to PC. These phones get junked up over time the same as a PC so a reset is a good thing unless you buy a new phone every release.
