I'd go for FRS. In fact we have a set even though both the wife and I have Ham licenses, and have for years (40+ for me, 25+ for her)
But honestly Verizon has really good coverage in the west. Yes there are places where you will not get coverage, but that is true of CB, FRS and Ham radio.
Say you are in a narrow canyon, you are unlikely to get contact beyond a mile or so, with just about anything.
But the radios you have, plus cell phone might be as good as it gets.
