I'd suggest a couple of CB walkie talkies. You should be able to pick up a couple for next to nothing in a second hand store somewhere. You do need a license to operate them, but if memory serves, that license is free or almost free. They'll have a range of maybe 35 miles if conditions are just right.

Those small digital walkie talkies don't have much range, and it is true they don't go around curves well. CBs are better on that score.
