a handheld marine radio such as this one operate in the VHF hi-band between 156-160 mhz. they are FM radios and thus line-of-sight. the radio in the link is typical and has a max output of 5-watts, same as many GMRS handheld radios they have very good range because they are usually used on open water where there are no obstructions. on land their performance would be about the same as a GMRS handheld, maybe a tad better as the GMRS radio operates in the UHF portion of the spectrum and thus, with everything else being equal, has shorter range. as noted use on land for what the OP has described is a violation of federal law. chances of getting caught are slim but if caught the fines can be enormous.
