Trust me...I mean not to offend. I live on a resort island in SC and even here with or without 4G, we have spotty reception along the coastal isles when we are camping at Hunting Island or Skidaway Island.
We will not be on Interstates most of the time.
We are not trying to keep up a running dialogue.
We just want to not be tethered to one another so that my mother can go on ahead of the camper and touch base if she sees some place she would like to stop. With a camper in tow around mountains, not so easy to just turn around and go back to see a sight, etc.
I like to be prepared and make things as effortless as possible. With a bunch of kids in tow, I am thinking about safety and communication, etc.
we travel around the west/midwest and we find that there are many highways w/o cell reception for anywhere from a few miles to 50 miles or more. Secondary roads can be even more problematic. When we travel with our Daughter and her family in two cars, we just use our motorola talkabouts for car/car communication instead of the cell phones. Depending apon terain we can be separated by between 1 mile (hills/mountains) minumum to up to 4-5 miles max (flat open terrain) and still have reception. It's worked well for us. Believe me, there are sections of the interstate highway system that even with a 3W mobile amp cell phone reception for voice is NOT available.
If your going to be often seperated by more than a mile or two, the "talkabouts" probably won't satisfy your needs. But for shorter distances they work great. We also use them to communicate between rigs when there are several of us towing trailers headed for the same campground. And once there, they are convienent as well.
