You can get some good deals with Sprint and T-mobile if their coverage suits you. I have threads here on both for free or little money. My TMO hotspot isn't unlimited but the Binge on streaming is. Take the streaming away and 5 gigs is a lot for futzing around the internet.
So in Denver metro both are usable and in many places much faster than Cricket. On the edge of town it's a different story with weaker signals and a lot of congestion issues for Sprint and TMO. Cricket is consistent everywhere and all day.
I've only been up the hills once this year with all of the devices. The only consistent connection was Verizon 3G, none of the rest of them had anything to brag about.
