dash camera recommendation

my old dash camera needs to be replaced. All the new ones I've looked at have a thousand more features than I need. Can anyone recommend a unit that you can take out of the box, plug it in to the cigarette lighter , stick it on the windshield and go?

  • Today I bought a Garmin Dash Cam 20 (no longer manufactured) at Costco (Canada). They have it on for $137.XX CDN including a 32GB card. The same unit anywhere else I could find is $200-$250 without the card (or only 8GB). It doesn't have "Park/Surveillance Mode" but does have GPS capability. The power cord that comes with it is the same as their GPS units - 5' not long enough to run around the windshield. If the hanging cord bothers me, guess I'll have to throw another $25 for a Garmin 10' cord. It has excellent reviews as far a quality is concerned but I haven't had a chance to try it myself yet.

At Best Buy here in Canada they have a Papago dash cam that has a bracket that clips onto the front side of the rearview mirror. I don't know if BB in the US carries the same brand.
  • Costco has a Cobra dashcam. I've had 2 for 2 years. Excellent unit unless you think you're supposed to actually watch the recorded videos on it. The tiny screen is really only for setting up the field of view and not meant for anything else. Don't bother with a larger chip, if you're dashcam is meant for insurance reasons, there's no need.

I dont want to replace the whole mirror since mine has the backup cam built in. I just wanted one that you couldnt really notice it was there so less chance of the truck getting broken into and having it stolen.
  • I run wih a FalconZero F170HD+. Been very pleased with it. Has some features I will probably never use, but has all the ones that I was looking for.

  • :) Hi, my Cobra dash cam was failing so I returned it. I want one with a screen large enough to be seen with out a microscope.
