IIRC
the ISPs have been selling aggredated data,
xxx percent visit amazon
yyy percent check medical records
etc..
the bill was intended to stop from selling specific data
your name your address ,and what you are visiting ,viewing etc..
IF you shop online sites, those sites KNOW who you are
I don't want my ISP selling SPECIFIC info to anybody that wants to buy it
I pay my ISP for internet access, if they want to sell my info, they can start giving me free access and a cut of the pay off
the places i visit are free services for content or i pay them for content
my ISP is utility provider, just like water and power
and has NO right to sell specific info about me to anybody
the ISPs did NOT want the bill, and want it repealed because they want to jump into a market place selling your specific info to adv
here is the ip address/email address of users shopping online
here is the list of users visiting medical sites .. etc..
internet service is a utility, like phone, gas , water
how much water or electricity you use is between you and them aand the bill you pay,
you would scream if your bank or credit card company, sold your name and info and purchase record to somebody
your card company knows what you charge and where
but not which movie you what on netflix, or what medical data you researched on the web
but your ISP has almost all of that
some of this is NOT exact comparison
but you get the idea
Amazon knows what you buy, the card copany what you spend and where
do you want them selling that info the walmart ,best buy, joes what nots,
thats what the isps want to do
IMO their business, is selling me a data service, NOT selling my data traffic to third parties
