If you really do have updates or big things to download, find a free wifi spot nearby and use that. Last time I was out, I needed some big updates, so there was a little cafe nearby that had free wifi, but did require a password from the cafe. getting that, I used one of their booths, and had a nice breakfast and several cups of coffee while downloading and installing the updates. However, as others will tell you, avoid some of the really "Open" wifi places. For me, a good place to work is a public library. Most have internet access available now, and are resonably safe to use. Their networks usually have some type of protection built in.
