Desktop suggestions

You may want to look at something like the DELL M6500 or newer workstations laptop. This is a top of the line laptop and being portable you can bring it along with you on your RV trips. My workstation laptop was purchased from OFF-LEASE on the internet and is a first class high end performance unit. It is DOCKING STATION capable which allows me to use in the home or in the RV by just snapping it into the docking station. My system is 99% the same setup at both locations and using the same LAPTOP has big benefits with having the same software and support wherever I go.

I use the VERIZON MIFI connections which gives me internet just about anywhere we go...

Works out great for me...

Really light use? Get a tablet or a decent laptop. There are some really good deals on laptops right now.
MY Asus has been really good for an old machine.

simple question deserves a simple answer. yes.

you can get a basic desktop chassis, 4Gb memory, 500Gb disk space, mouse and keyboard for under $280. This is an example from BestBuy. You might be able to use that with your existing monitor or you could get a new monitor for under $200.

If you ONLY use a computer at your desk and you have space, a system like the one above would be my suggestion.

However, if you think you'll be doing any TRAVELING with a need for a computer (like paying bills on the road), then I very much like the idea of a laptop. This would be a lower cost laptop that I think would meet your needs: Best Buy Laptop

I'm not recommending Best Buy as a store - just using their catalog as an example of systems to consider. One advantage is their no-hassle return and service intake at stores throughout the US. WalMart, OfficeMax, etc are other great possibilities. Since I'm technically knowledgeable, I buy my computers (primarily HP desktops and laptops) directly from the vendor website and have always had great luck.

I think you will be very pleased with your choice. Check Costco. I too prefer to work mostly on a desktop, and have a cheap small laptop for travel. You get a lot more computer for the dollar with a desktop.

Contrary to what Microworst says, your old versions of Word and Excel will work just fine on a Win 8 machine, if you have the old discs.

Have you considered a laptop? They are nice because one can do work on the RV then take it home and all the work is still in the computer; no need to transfer data to the home computer.
There are other devices that will do what you want but they don't have as good a keyboard making doing work a little more difficult; I'm thinking iPad.
We just bought an HP laptop with Windows 7. We bought W7 because Windows 8 is vastly different and may be difficult to get used to.

Don't forget staples I've bought my last five for my office there for less then 300$ . Make sure you get at least 4 gigs of ram . check there weekly ads on line.
