The goodies other brands sport become much less significant if you can't connect. The RAZR Maxx has its issues but it gets the job done when others are not seeing a usable signal. We camp & are frequently on the fringes. So Motorola is my story and I'm sticking to it!

The Iphone 5 on Verizon can not do voice and data at the same time. This was an Apple decision. The fail rate for the Iphone 5 is slightly better than other high end phones. They still require resets and replacements. The camera on the Iphone 5 is normally rated high. If your invested in the Apple ecosystem the Iphone is probably for you. I'm not a fan of Itunes. I can usually tell when I'm talking with an Iphone person. The AT&T Iphone is the worst of all. The Motorola absolutely destroys the Iphone in call quality. I have yet to find an Iphone person admit their phone is the problem.

HTC just came out with the "One". Not available on Verizon. The One is highly rated. Given previous HTC phones upgrade track record and the quality I'd pass on HTC.

I've found LG phones internal memory system to be a mess. I recently played with an LG with a Quad Core processor and 2gb of ram. It was laggy. It also couldn't stream from my Seagate wifi hard drive.

Avoid Pantech.

The Samsung S4 just came out. I have the Vzw Samsung S3. I use NFC (Near Field Communication). I also use Wifi direct for large data transfer between devices. The S3/S4 also has AllCast for turning your TV into a mirror of the cellphone screen. I've heard Apple TV works better than AllCast. The S3 also has a great camera. The Samsung S3/S4 also has an easy mode. The screen is great for watching Youtube/movies. Call quality is also better than the Iphone.

This question (iOS vs Droid) is fast becoming a moot point. Both systems are developing into very user friendly OS's. That said, APPLE does maintain much tighter control over iOS. For those who are less technology savvy, this can be a real help. When a firmware update becomes available from APPLE, everyone gets it and it's simple to install.

APPLE products are more expensive without a doubt, but Build quality and materials far exceed the competition. Galaxy S4 is a terrific phone, but it's plastic and "feels" cheap. iPhone 5 feels totally different, and is.

In the end, it comes down to what you want in a phone and how tech savvy you are. Either phone can be a great choice.

In my case, I like iTunes and the fact that everything seamlessly syncs between my iPhone, DW's iPhone, our iPAD and Mac-Book....... All hands-off. It just works! ;-)

Motorola Droid RAZR Maxx (me) & Motorola Droid RAZR Maxx HD (DW).

We love our phones. At a recent rally in MD we had 4G ~80% of the time 3G the rest with an occasional drop to 1X. Fellow campers with iPhones or SIII's barely could get 3G or even 1X I loaned my Hotspot feature to one couple to facilitate a contract negotiation.

They indeed had more glitz but we were gitn'er done!

Gee, I use a Samsung Galaxy S-III and as for easy to understand... Well, the only tribble I had was a sign beside the road.. I sent a picture of it to David Gerrold (Author of Star Trek episode "The Trouble with Tribbles" It's for the Tribble center).

Seriously, I have never had a problem understanding it. Works great, using it to send this with the aid of my computer (Tethered)

Well, we just finished week 1 with the WP8 Nokia 822 and all I can say is WOW. What a difference between the Droid, which we hated and this windows phone, which we both love. Easy to understand, easy to use, very good battery life, excellent pictures and on & on. all I can say is if you feel intimidated by a smart phone, look at one with the Windows WP8 OS and specifically the Nokia 822. It is user friendly for the older crowd and has all the apps most folks will ever want, with new ones being added weekly.

I just bought the iPhone 5. We were using my sister's hand me down LG enVee for phone calls only, no data or texting. Since we are Verizon customers, I got am email saying they were offering $100 off on an iPhone to upgrade. So, I bought. My sister loves her 4s. I am a Mac user (photographer) so it should be easy to figure out. Never the less, I do plan on signing up for a Verizon workshop to learn more. So many helpful apps so I am glad I bought the 32 gb version. We will stay with the 65+ talk (200 minutes plus free on nights/weekends and Verizon friends/family), forgo the texting for now and get 2 gb of data as we would like to send photos to friends and family of where we are. I used the Verizon data calculator and found that when we travel I would use between 1gb and 2 gb for locating campgrounds, stores, fuel, etc. There are some cool apps out there, one for photographers called the Photographers Ephemiris that shows sunrise.sunset, ditto for moon, shadows, etc. $10 but should be worth it. Also one for night sky. And iBird for DH with calls and photos. Pandora and Shazam for music. I can't wait to get started.

I got my first smart phone a few months ago. Despite definitely not being a fan of Apple's business practices, what I (somewhat grudgingly) ended up buying after doing some rather thorough research was an iPhone 5.

My reasons were relatively simple -- In reading many, many reviews it seemed that the overwhelming consensus was that the iPhones were the best built smart phones and the easiest for beginners to use. I really did like the bigger screens of the Samsungs, but the devices felt so flimsy compared to iPhones. And sturdy has always been a factor for me in all my "dumb" cell phone purchases. I also liked the fact that if I had a problem with the device I could go to an Apple store and have it looked at.

In reading so many reviews, the only smart phones that a majority of people really seemed unhappy with were the Droids. Someone will now likely come along and post about how much they love Droids. I'm just saying what my impression was after reading many, many reviews. But do keep in mind that people are more apt to post negative reviews than positive ones.

So far I haven't regretted my iPhone purchase. The phone is sturdy and performs flawlessly. Learning to use it wasn't difficult, although I do have two kids here who are fluent in Apple who gave me some minimal assistance. Although I'm certainly not in love with the iTunes/app store, it's not as horrendous to deal with as I feared.

Had the DroidX for a couple years and now the Motorola Razr Maxx. Like going from a Suzuki to a BMW. Its and Android phone so apps are readily available and its battery life is unbelievable. Plus its 4G.

The iPhone has a better UI. However, there is a lot that Apple blocks you from doing on their device (no way to block incoming calls without a jailbreak, for example, unless you block everyone with Do Not Disturb mode.)

Android is a bit clunkier, but you can get it to do what you want, especially if you use a utility that can uninstall or "freeze" stuff (so it doesn't take up memory) that you don't really need on the device.
