Digital TV Reception

My motorhome doe not have the new digital televisions and I ran into the problem of not being able to receive signal to my televisions when staying at RV parks with newer cable systems. Don't know if I am saying this correctly, but was told I needed newer televisions or a digital tuner. Can anyone help me understand what I need to do? Thank you

  • Set top converters won't work for QAM systems unless it's specifically listed. The easiest and by far best solution is to just replace the TV's.

BTW- there are still a few analog LP transmitters in the Central Valley if you just want to test your existing equipment.

Just go down to WALMART and get a 22-inch VIZIO flat screen HDTV... These are on sale alot and a good buy for the RV...

These are very light weight and do not consume much energy...

GREAT QUALITY picture compared to the old analog TVs...

Also using your OTA BATWING antenna you will be able to pick up the digital TV stations being transmitted from the local towns. This is all transmitted in high def (HDTV) mode and very easy on the eyes. This is also FREE to the public.

Televisions are divided into 3 ages:
VERY OLD: only get Analog NTSC signals, NO digital capability at all.
Medium old: Get Analog NTSC AND.. QAM Digital (most cable systems) may have multiple cable scemes in their programming)

MODERN, these are normally Wide screen (16x9 I think is the ratio) and these should be capable of seeing both Analog NTSC and Digital ATSC as well as MOST cable schemes.

Some Cable Schemes require a set top box from the cable company.. No options with those.. NOTE: They may be able to provide one for you.

Recommendation: Upgrade to a new Wide Screen ATSC compatible.

I just did my last Upgrade,, The only Analog only I still have is one I keep in the basement, in a tool box, which if I ever re-up for Sat TV, I'll use it for aiming since a small portable TV and the software in the Sat Receiver is better than most in-line meters, Dish software... Well a meter as good will set you back a kilo-buck... USED.

My last upgrade was a 28" Dynex that replaced the Toshiba CRT job I had in the front of the motor home 102 dollars courtesy of a pawn shop.. Fits perfectly (Same width) Did cut the box down a bit height wise.. Long term I'll put in a door and shelves.
  • Your older televisions will work just fine if you purchase a "converter" which acts as a digital tuner for sets with analog tuners. When accessing cable systems the cable company already converts the signals so no converter box would be necessary. Digital has some great advantages over analog signals with it's perfect picture but it's perfect or it's NOTHING so most don't get as many long distance stations as with analog systems. Used to be you could watch a somewhat snowey picture on a lot of stations which will no longer receive a signal at all.
  • in some parks they provide boxes, however in our RV there is no easy way to hook the boxes up.
  • You either need to upgrade your TV set's to new ones with digital TV tuner's, or purchase Digital adapter boxes that convert the new digital signal to work with your old analog TV's. Your existing RV style antenna will still work in both cases.
  • Not to say that you're behind the times, but you need to dump those old TVs and get newer flat panels.
