Digital TV Tuners

When I installed my SENSAR pro I put in a direct RG-6 cable from it's output #2 to the converter in the rear... This is then split between the converter and ONE of the TV's in the rear (Rear converter is an Insignia, which is a Zenith, which is an LG, and thus does not work properly by the way, NO LB product I've ever owned worked properly without modification.. in the case of the Insignia converter, Cycling power fixes it, or frequent channel changes).

Thus it gets like 4x the signal it would get if I ran it through the switch box The reason is not the switch box (though that does add to the loss) its the lowest bidder RG-59.

You hit the jackpot.

Wound up getting the 24" Insignia with the same tuner specs as the 19", the 720p was on sale for $139. I've also ordered the Sensar Pro. Thanks everyone for the good info.

Not only was the 24" $20 cheaper than the 19", the 19" has an internal power supply where the 24" has the a wall wart with 12v output, so I plan to just wire it directly to 12v and eliminate the inverter.

When TV went digital I could not get reception in the bedroom either still don't.

Someone here on the forum stated (in 'my' simple layman terms).....
that digital doesn't like going thru multiple connections or something like that. He had a solution for it for an RV feed back to the bedroom that would work with digital.


I have now bought several flat screen TV's and they are NOT equal when it comes to accepting signal strength. I fought and figured it was my antenna trying to get channels while on the road, only to find it varies GREATLY from TV to TV manufacturer.

Right now I have a real small Vizio that gets ALL the channels and the real big flat screen that is a Slyvania gets squat. All when parked in the same spot. :R

For over the air the only soup bowl that is important is ATSC

MOST digital cable systems are QAM

Never heard of 8-VSB but guessing that is an odd-cable standard.

The problem with reception in the rear is likely something I pick on all the time, Lowest bidder RG-59 cable.. This super high loss cable is not the best for anything... Quaility RG-59 might run the company a dollar or two more per RV but it does a much better job.. RG-6 is better still.

MOST (not all) Digital TV is UHF, where as in the old days they used not only UHF but two VHF bands.. The higher the frequency, the greater the loss in any coax cable... And what is more, with the switch to digital most stations not only moved UP in frequency, but DOWN in radiated power, Some way down (When I go to Digital modes on my radios I cut power to like 40%, and range .. Well it goes way up). It may well be the line loss is too great.. IS on my rig, I see the loss even on chan 3 (DVR output channel). I mean.. BAD.

Finding meaningful tuner specs went away many years ago. Any of the top tier products (Sony, Samsung, etc.) all perform about the same. The same for the 2nd tier: LG, etc. gear. But Pyle... Dump it.

Also, invest in a Winegard SensarPro. It makes finding stations fun, and has a variable gain line amp, and a dual output to help with your line losses in the coach.

If you like the tuner results in the front TV I would buy another of the same brand if you can find one that meets your needs.

ATSC standards are a set of standards developed by the Advanced Television Systems Committee for digital television transmission over terrestrial, cable, and satellite networks. (NTSC was the old system for over the air)

8VSB is the modulation method used for broadcast in the ATSC digital television standard. 8VSB is an 8-level vestigial sideband modulation...this is good for HD over the air broadcast.

QAM is the type of modulation that most cable providers in the US use. More efficient and can be used to inexpensively encrypt the signal. Clear QAM is a non-encrypted signal.
