Looking to replace the flat panel TV in the bedroom. Installed the Winegard Wingman and get great OTA digital channels on the Insignia in the living room, very poor reception on the old bedroom TV. We don't have satellite so rely on OTA channels wherever we are.So I'm shopping for a new TV and want one that will bring in as many OTA channels as possible, but I'm not sure what the alphabet soup of tuner specs means.Looking at a 19" Insignia and it says it has a digital tuner as follows "ATSC, 8-VSB, Clear-QAM".Is this good? What should I be looking for?

Try the new TV in the same location in the bedroom before purchasing another one. If it also gets poor reception you will know there is a problem with the cabling and not the TV itself.

It's a Pyle brand that came with the RV and it's a 2007 model, so it's dated. plus the picture is really crappy, DW wants HD in the bedroom too....so not just replacing it for the tuner.

ATSC standards are a set of standards developed by the Advanced Television Systems Committee for digital television transmission over terrestrial, cable, and satellite networks. (NTSC was the old system for over the air)8VSB is the modulation method used for broadcast in the ATSC digital television standard. 8VSB is an 8-level vestigial sideband modulation...this is good for HD over the air broadcast.QAM is the type of modulation that most cable providers in the US use. More efficient and can be used to inexpensively encrypt the signal. Clear QAM is a non-encrypted signal.ALL Good. Go for it!

Thanks Biscuit, I knew somebody had to know what this stuff meant!

If you like the tuner results in the front TV I would buy another of the same brand if you can find one that meets your needs.

It's a Pyle brand that came with the RV and it's a 2007 model, so it's dated. plus the picture is really crappy, DW wants HD in the bedroom too....so not just replacing it for the tuner.
